Emmanuel Ugboaja, the esteemed General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has reportedly passed away at the age of 60, following a protracted illness. Ugboaja, who was the fifth individual to hold the position of NLC General Secretary, is said to have died on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Specific details surrounding his demise were still unclear at the time this report was compiled.

According to a report by Vanguard, the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, conveyed a letter from Ugboaja's family to members of the Congress' National Executive Council (NEC), who were convened for a meeting in Enugu State.

Ugboaja commenced his career in trade unionism with the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, an affiliate of the NLC. He subsequently served as the General Secretary of this union from 2000 to 2005. Between 2006 and 2009, he contributed his expertise to the Alliance for Credible Elections as their Coordinator for Advocacy and Mobilisation, before joining the NLC Secretariat in 2009.

His extensive experience also saw him participate significantly in critical national political and constitutional reform initiatives. He was a delegate to the 2005 Political/Constitutional Reform Conference during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and again to the 2014 Constitution Review Conference under former President Goodluck Jonathan. Ugboaja's appointment as NLC General Secretary came in August 2019, succeeding Peter Ozo-Eson. This appointment was officially ratified by the NLC National Executive Council during its meeting in Kano on August 21, 2019.

Ugboaja was widely acknowledged as a seasoned trade unionist, possessing a legal background and a wealth of experience across organised labour, civil-society advocacy, and national policy negotiations.
