Professor Josiah Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, August 18, reiterated the commission's commitment to ensuring a credible election ahead of the 2027 presidential polls. Speaking at the National Peace Accord, an event that precedes the 2027 presidential election, Professor Amupitan firmly stated that the electoral body would not show favouritism towards any candidate or political party.

Addressing lingering concerns about potential bias during the upcoming electoral exercise, Amupitan unequivocally declared, "INEC has no interest in who wins or loses any election. The commission does not have a candidate, nor does it favour any political platform."

The INEC boss also charged political stakeholders to elevate the discourse during their campaigns. "Let the 2027 election campaign be a marketplace of ideas, not a theatre of war," he advised. Amupitan, who is a professor of law, further highlighted what the Nigerian populace truly desires: "Nigerians do not want insults; they want solutions. They deserve to hear clear, concrete, and measurable manifestos."

Professor Amupitan assured the nation that the electoral umpire is dedicated to building on its past achievements to deliver a truly credible election. He offered insights into the commission's preparedness, stating, "I am pleased to report that our preparations for the 2027 elections are progressing with absolute precision. We are scaling our operational logistics to manage a massive nationwide ad hoc workforce of 1.4 million personnel across over 176,000 polling units."
