Tinubu's State Police Proposal Gets House Attention, May Align with Senate Version

The House of Representatives has begun deliberations on the Executive Bill for the establishment of State Police, sent to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu. This move is part of ongoing efforts to bolster Nigeria's internal security framework through constitutional reforms. According to Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, the House might adopt the Senate's version of the State Police Bill, with only minor adjustments as necessary. Kalu recalled that before the National Assembly went on recess, the House had passed its own Constitution Alteration Bill on State Police on June 11. However, after President Tinubu forwarded the Executive Bill on July 14, lawmakers rescinded their earlier decision to consider the President's proposal. The Deputy Speaker explained that the President, being the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, is best positioned to introduce comprehensive legislation to address the country's growing security challenges. The Executive Bill has already passed its first and second readings in the House, and the extensive stakeholder engagement during the National Assembly Open Week served as the required public hearing. Kalu emphasized that every member of the Constitution Review Committee has a responsibility to thoroughly examine the legislation to ensure it reflects the aspirations and expectations of Nigerians. He described the proposed State Police Bill as one of President Tinubu's key constitutional reform initiatives, noting that the President has consistently advocated for a multi-layered policing system since his tenure as Governor of Lagos State. As Kalu stated, 'Tinubu's continued support for State Police demonstrates consistency between his long-held convictions and his actions in office, as he continues to champion the reform as a strategic response to Nigeria's security challenges.' The House's consideration of the State Police Bill highlights the alignment between the Executive and the Legislature on prioritizing security, with a broad national consensus that improving security must remain at the centre of governance.
