Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who ran under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has emphasized the crucial need for Nigeria to be led by individuals possessing competence, accountability, and compassion. According to Obi, such leadership is essential to fully harness the nation's vast human and natural endowments, steering the country towards a path of enduring development.

Obi shared these insights on Tuesday via a post on his official X handle. His remarks followed his participation in a high-profile roundtable discussion titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” which was hosted by the European Council on Foreign Relations at their office in Berlin, Germany. The discussions at the event, as outlined by Obi, centered on Nigeria's democratic trajectory post-2027, strategies for development cooperation, international affairs, and methods to bolster bilateral partnerships aimed at accelerating economic prosperity.

The former Governor of Anambra State conveyed his appreciation for the significant interest shown by the various participants in Nigeria's future prospects. Obi firmly restated his conviction that Nigeria possesses all the necessary resources to achieve prosperity and global competitiveness, provided it adopts sound governance principles.

He elaborated, stating: “During the discussions, I reiterated my unwavering belief that Nigeria possesses all the human and natural resources required to become a prosperous, secure, and globally competitive nation. What is required is competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership that prioritises investment in people, education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law, and strong institutions over politics of consumption.”

Obi further added that “Nigeria’s future is bright, but only if we make the deliberate choices that will move our country from consumption to production, from poverty to prosperity, and from division to unity. By embracing good governance, fiscal responsibility, and productive partnerships with the international community, we can build an economy that works for all Nigerians and restores our nation’s standing among the comity of nations.”

The event, as described by Obi, convened a diverse group of attendees including policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, representatives from international organizations, and members of the international media. Their collective purpose was to deliberate on Nigeria's future outlook and its position within the global community. Obi concluded by thanking the European Council on Foreign Relations for the invitation, underscoring the importance of such engagements in fostering international cooperation and forging lasting partnerships.
