Lagos State Government Rejects Politicization of Flood Control Efforts

The Lagos State Government has firmly stated that its continuous efforts in managing drainage systems, wetlands, and floodplains have significantly reduced the impact of intense rainfall across the metropolis. Officials are cautioning detractors against exploiting the seasonal flash floods for political gain, especially amidst the increasing challenges posed by climate change.
During a review session that covered critical drainage networks and areas prone to flooding, including Oniru, Chevron Drive, Agungi-Ajiran, Freedom Road, and Orange Island, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources addressed public discontent. He dismissed the severe scrutiny and accusations of state negligence as unwarranted, emphasizing the unwavering commitment of emergency teams dedicated to managing the deluges.
The Commissioner remarked, “Yes, they are politicising it, but that is what they want to do this season. They are not giving this team enough flowers for the work they have been doing. I know the effort they put in day and night.” He further explained the methodical approach taken over the past three years since initial reports emerged. This approach has included improvements in waste management, the prohibition of styrofoam and certain plastics, the removal of illegal structures on floodplains, the restoration of wetlands, and the enhancement of drainage infrastructure.
Drawing a comparison, the Commissioner highlighted Ghana’s president’s recent speech on Accra’s flooding issues. He noted that the measures Lagos has implemented over the last three years are precisely what Accra is now preparing to undertake. “So that can tell you how we have been able to manage what we have in Lagos. What we have is not overflowing flooding; it is flash flooding here and there. Time-stamp it and go back there in a few hours,” he concluded, differentiating the nature of flooding experienced in the state.
