2027 Elections: NYSC DG Warns Corps Members Against Partisan Politics
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has cautioned corps members against engaging in partisan political activities.
Nafiu gave the warning during a town hall meeting with 2026 Batch 'B' Stream I corps members at the temporary NYSC Orientation Camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
According to him, the credibility and integrity of the NYSC are built on its longstanding political neutrality, stressing that corps members must avoid any actions capable of creating the impression that the scheme is aligned with any political party.
"Since 1999, we have continued to strengthen our democratic process. As we approach another electioneering season, I advise you to stay away from campaign grounds," he said.
The NYSC Director-General specifically warned corps members against wearing NYSC uniforms or insignia at political rallies and campaign events, noting that such appearances could easily be misinterpreted by the public.
"If you are seen wearing our uniform or insignia at a campaign ground, it could be interpreted as the NYSC identifying with a particular political party," he explained.
Nafiu noted that both Nigerians and the international community have continued to trust corps members with key election duties because of their neutrality and professionalism.
"For the past 53 years, we have been entrusted with this responsibility. Do not compromise that trust," he warned.
He further encouraged corps members to be agents of positive change, build meaningful relationships, and focus on self-development.
"This is not the time to be lazy; it is time to work. Reduce excessive use of social media and invest more in your personal growth," he advised.
Earlier, the Gombe State NYSC Coordinator, Chinwe Nwachukwu, revealed that 1,349 corps members had been registered for the 2026 Batch 'B' Stream I orientation exercise in the state.
She also highlighted some of the challenges facing the temporary orientation camp, including irregular electricity supply and the absence of a multipurpose hall.
