Peter Obi Urges Tinubu's Resignation Amidst Governance Challenges, Citing UK Parallel

Peter Obi, who contested the last presidential election under the Labour Party banner, has publicly demanded that President Bola Tinubu step down from office. Obi's assertion is based on what he describes as deteriorating economic circumstances, escalating insecurity, and broader governance issues, all of which, he argues, necessitate political accountability.
Making his stance known via a post on the social media platform X, Obi indicated that his call was prompted by recent political events in the United Kingdom. He specifically referenced a speech delivered on Monday by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where Starmer announced his intention to resign in July.
Obi quoted, saying, “This morning, I listened to the British Prime Minister’s speech announcing his planned resignation in July.” He further elaborated, “As a keen observer of global politics, my primary interest lies in examining what successful nations do right and the structural factors that cause others to lag or struggle with governance and development.” Obi highlighted the reasons for Starmer's impending departure, stating, “The Prime Minister’s planned resignation comes amid mounting public frustration over a stagnant economy, a worsening cost-of-living crisis, and a perceived failure to honour key campaign pledges.”
Shifting focus to Nigeria’s own political landscape, the former Anambra State governor drew comparisons to the period preceding the 2015 general elections, recalling the significant criticisms leveled against the then-incumbent government of President Goodluck Jonathan. Obi penned, “Looking inward in our dear country, we can recall our own situation. Before 2015, our President on several occasions championed the call for the then President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over economic hardship and insecurity affecting Nigerians.” He specifically noted, “During the Chibok school kidnapping incident, he demanded the immediate resignation of President Jonathan, arguing that the government had failed in its most fundamental duty of protecting lives.”
Obi additionally brought up the electoral pledges made by President Tinubu during his 2023 presidential campaign. Obi reminded his audience, “During the 2023 election campaign, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made several promises, including improved electricity supply.” He further quoted Tinubu, saying, “He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments—particularly in providing stable power, fighting corruption, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.”
However, Obi contended that the present conditions in the nation starkly contradict those earlier assurances. He elaborated on the current situation: “At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased.” Obi further asserted, “Similar concerns are reflected across other critical sectors such as security, infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts, all of which have regressed. We are in the worst possible condition.”
Concluding his statement, the former governor of Anambra State reiterated his call for the President to vacate his position. Obi maintained that such an action would significantly bolster democratic accountability and establish a vital precedent for subsequent leaders. He declared, “I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance. Such a gesture would help enthrone a political culture rooted in accountability and responsibility, rather than further entrenching impunity.” Obi continued, “It would also send a powerful message that public office is a sacred trust, not an entitlement, and help build a society in which future leaders understand that failure carries consequences.” He concluded his appeal by stating, “Only by ending the culture of impunity can we secure a better future for the society our children will inherit in a New Nigeria that is possible.”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for President Bola Tinubu's resignation, citing Nigeria's worsening economic conditions, heightened insecurity, and overall governance failures. Obi drew inspiration from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's recent resignation announcement and highlighted Tinubu's own past demands for Goodluck Jonathan's resignation, as well as the 2023 campaign promises. He believes Tinubu stepping down would foster democratic accountability and set a crucial precedent for future leaders.
