Lagos Lawmakers Commence Comprehensive Review of Council Projects

The Lagos State House of Assembly’s Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development is set to embark on an extensive evaluation of projects across the state’s 57 local government areas (LGAs) and local council development areas (LCDAs). This inspection tour is scheduled to commence on Monday, June 22, 2026.
According to the committee, this exercise forms a crucial part of the Assembly’s constitutional mandate for oversight, with the primary goals of fostering accountability, ensuring transparency, and enhancing the delivery of essential services at the community level. Sanni Babatunde, who chairs the committee, stated that the inspection would allow members to gauge the progress of both ongoing and completed projects, assess their actual impact on residents, and verify that public funds allocated for development are utilized responsibly.
Babatunde emphasized, “The oversight exercise is an integral part of the constitutional duties of the Lagos State House of Assembly to ensure accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery at the grassroots level.” He further highlighted the pivotal role of local governments as the closest tier of governance to the populace, responsible for providing vital services and infrastructure within various communities.
The committee’s itinerary will include scrutinizing a diverse range of projects. These encompass road construction and rehabilitation initiatives, improvements in drainage infrastructure, healthcare facilities, educational structures, market developments, various community development programmes, and other interventions implemented by the local councils.
Babatunde clarified that the purpose of this exercise is not to target or victimize any council administration. Instead, it is designed to reinforce good governance principles and encourage the efficient management of public resources. He reiterated, “The oversight exercise is not intended for a witch-hunt but rather to promote good governance, strengthen institutional accountability, and encourage efficient utilisation of public resources.”
The committee underscored that the inspection tour offers a vital opportunity to ascertain whether projects have been executed in strict adherence to approved specifications and truly align with the specific needs of the residents. The Assembly committee reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to supporting policies and programmes aimed at accelerating grassroots development, elevating local governance standards, and ultimately improving the quality of life for all citizens across Lagos State.
