Adelabu Debunks SDP Defection Talk, Affirms APC Commitment

Adebayo Adelabu, a former Minister of Power and a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the 2027 Oyo State governorship, has categorically refuted recent reports linking him to a potential defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His media aide, Femi Awogboro, issued a statement on Wednesday, clarifying that Adelabu has neither considered nor authorized any move to the SDP or any other political party.
This clarification follows a statement from the media office of Saheed Oladele, an SDP governorship hopeful, which had cautioned Adelabu against allegedly attempting to 'hijack' the SDP's gubernatorial ticket 'through the backdoor' ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections. Awogboro dismissed Oladele's assertions as baseless fabrications, asserting that such claims exist purely in the imagination of those promoting them.
He emphasized that the APC's gubernatorial primary process is still underway, with no official results having been declared. Consequently, Awogboro argued, "the fabrication of stories about a purported defection lacks any factual basis whatsoever and can only be viewed as a desperate attempt to attract public attention by exploiting the name and stature of Adelabu."
Awogboro further described the attempt to associate Adelabu with a 'non-existent defection agenda' as highly disrespectful and politically motivated. He characterized it as "nothing more than a calculated effort to generate media attention and create an artificial political trend where none exists."
The aide reiterated Chief Adelabu's unwavering loyalty to the APC, stressing that the politician is not driven by political desperation. He highlighted Adelabu's extensive experience, having held significant top government appointments and leadership responsibilities, stating that he has no reason to engage in the kind of "political desperation being falsely attributed to him."
Awogboro added that "it is both insulting and ridiculous to suggest that a personality of Chief Adelabu’s standing would be seeking relevance through a hurried and imaginary political defection," further noting that such a claim demonstrates a poor understanding of the political realities within Oyo State.
He urged those responsible for circulating these unfounded narratives to cease their actions and instead concentrate on building their own political profiles and presenting their credentials to the electorate. He firmly stated that "political relevance cannot be manufactured through association with another person’s name."
Finally, Awogboro demanded a retraction and an apology from those behind the publication, warning that legal action could follow. He confirmed that Adelabu's media team is currently reviewing the development and is prepared to take legal steps against what it considers defamatory claims. Chief Adelabu, he concluded, remains focused on his vision for Oyo State, dedicated to the ideals and processes of the APC, and committed to engaging the populace on issues vital to their future, vowing not to be sidetracked by "cheap publicity stunts, political opportunism, or attention-seeking fabrications."
