Nigeria Deploys Troops to Benin for Smooth Democratic Transition

In a move to bolster democratic stability in the West African sub-region, the Nigerian Army deployed troops to Benin Republic in April 2026. According to Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col Appolonia Anele, the deployment was a proactive measure to support the country's electioneering period and ensure a peaceful transfer of power to the new President, Romuald Wadagni. The operation, codenamed Atilehin Alafiya II, was carried out under the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Anele explained that although the troops were not directly involved in election duties, they maintained a strategic presence to deter potential security threats and reinforce public confidence. Throughout their deployment, the troops conducted patrols, monitored key locations, and sustained a visible security presence across critical areas within the Cotonou metropolis and its environs. The successful execution of the mission highlights the Nigerian Army's capacity for rapid deployment and operational professionalism, as well as its commitment to regional peace initiatives. Anele reaffirmed the Army's dedication to working collaboratively with regional partners to ensure a secure and peaceful environment across the region, in line with the objectives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The deployment underscores Nigeria's leadership role in promoting democratic governance and stability within the sub-region.
