Details emerge: UAE Funds Joyful Mass Wedding for 250 Palestinian Couples in Gaza

Full Story
The United Arab Emirates recently backed a large-scale wedding ceremony for 250 Palestinian couples residing in Gaza, providing a moment of happiness and festivity amidst the region's ongoing conflict, widespread displacement, and severe economic challenges. This joyous occasion took place on Friday along the Gaza City beachfront and was orchestrated by the UAE’s humanitarian initiative, Operation Gallant Knight 3, as reported by The National newspaper, a UAE-based publication, on Saturday.
This significant event brought together brides and grooms from various parts of the enclave. The women were adorned in traditional wedding gowns, holding bouquets, while the men appeared in dark suits, with some incorporating the customary keffiyeh scarves into their attire. Many of these couples had previously put off their wedding plans due to the prolonged war, widespread displacement, and financial difficulties, which have made it increasingly difficult for young Palestinians to afford marriage celebrations.
Dr. Anwar Gargash, the UAE’s diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed, remarked that this gesture underscored his nation's unwavering humanitarian commitment to the people of Gaza. Speaking on Saturday, Gargash was quoted saying, 'Gaza and its people remain at the heart of the UAE’s humanitarian efforts despite the world’s many crises.' He further elaborated that humanitarian aid extends beyond merely alleviating suffering; it also encompasses endeavours to 'bring back a smile and revive hope for a better tomorrow'.
The wedding ceremony coincided with the three-year anniversary of Operation Gallant Knight 3, the UAE's humanitarian mission dedicated to Gaza, which commenced on November 5, 2023. According to figures released by the Emirates News Agency, the operation has successfully delivered over 136,000 tonnes of aid, valued at an estimated $4.16 billion. The UAE stated that its contributions account for approximately 46 percent of the total international humanitarian assistance reaching the Palestinian territories. This comprehensive aid programme includes essential provisions such as food, medical supplies, shelter, and various other forms of support for residents severely impacted by the conflict.
In related developments, an Ireland midfielder has called for the postponement of an Israel qualifier match, while musician Ed Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as 'catastrophic' and 'unjustifiable'. Separately, an Israeli Minister affirmed that Israel would not 'expel or deport' anyone from Gaza.
