US President Donald Trump indicated on Thursday that a significant agreement involving Russia, Ukraine, and potentially 'all of Europe' was on the horizon. This announcement came after First Lady Melania Trump hosted officials from the two conflict-ridden nations at the White House.

President Trump disclosed that he held an unscheduled discussion with Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, following Dmitriev’s participation in the event organized by the US first lady. These remarks are likely to heighten concerns in Ukraine and among European allies, suggesting a potential shift by Trump towards the Kremlin in pursuit of a broader accord. Such a deal could lead to a reduced US military presence in Europe and grant Moscow greater influence. These developments also precede the resumption of trilateral discussions involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for the week after, marking their first meeting since February.

While Melania Trump advocated for an 'enduring' ceasefire in Ukraine, building on a brief truce she helped facilitate in a Russian-occupied town, her 80-year-old husband hinted at an imminent 'very big', though unspecified, agreement. When questioned by reporters in the Oval Office about his talks with Dmitriev, Trump stated, “I can’t tell you what I discussed. But I’m just telling you, it’s going to be an agreement, it’s going to be a big agreement.” He further added, “It’s going to be very big. It’s going to involve more than Ukraine, and I could even say it might involve all of Europe. It’s going to be a big, beautiful agreement, and everyone’s going to be thrilled.” Trump also confirmed that he did not meet with Ukrainian officials who were present at the White House on Thursday.

Although the US president’s pledge to end the war within 24 hours of assuming office has seen fluctuating progress, his wife’s discreet diplomatic efforts have intensified. The unprecedented White House gathering between Russian and Ukrainian representatives aimed to extend a six-day localized truce established in Oleshky, a Ukrainian city severely affected by starvation. Addressing reporters, the first lady remarked, “Now we must use the courage we brought to Oleshky to find common ground through a shared concern for the suffering of innocent people.” She emphasized, “Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire.”

The 56-year-old Slovenian-born former model revealed that she was sending the envoys back with personal letters addressed to President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. President Zelensky honored Melania Trump with a national award for her role in mediating the Oleshky ceasefire, which a Ukrainian official personally presented to her at the White House. Dmitriev conveyed Putin’s gratitude to the US first lady for her “distinguished humanitarian role.” The White House meeting also saw the reunion of Russia’s human rights ombudsman, Yana Lantratova (who is sanctioned by Britain), and her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Lubinets, who developed an unexpected rapport during the Oleshky ceasefire.

In October 2025, the US first lady made headlines by announcing the establishment of a clandestine communication channel with Putin, aimed at reuniting children separated by the war. Since then, she has increasingly played a significant, albeit behind-the-scenes, diplomatic role in the Ukraine conflict, even as her husband openly campaigns for the Nobel Peace Prize despite his own unsuccessful attempts to halt the war. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, President Zelensky confirmed a “very detailed, hour-and-a-half-long” discussion with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in preparation for the upcoming Abu Dhabi talks. These talks have rekindled hopes for an end to the protracted conflict, though a recent reconciliation between Donald Trump and Putin has generated concerns that the United States might withdraw its support for Kyiv. Kushner reported meeting with Ukrainian, NATO, and European officials in Brussels to deliberate on “security guarantees for Ukraine and a broader European security architecture.” Reports also suggest Washington has been exploring potential business agreements with Russia as part of a comprehensive Ukraine deal.
