Trump Dismisses Iran Standoff as 'Small Potatoes' for America

On Friday, President Donald Trump characterized the ongoing conflict with Iran as "small potatoes" for the United States. This statement aligns with his administration's strategy to minimize the perceived severity of the clashes, particularly as critical midterm elections approach.

Trump's remarks to reporters in the Oval Office followed a day after Vice President JD Vance had also expressed reservations, stating, "I wouldn’t call it a war," despite escalating confrontations between the two nations in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Responding to queries about Vance's comments, Trump elaborated, "A lot of people don’t call it a war. I call it a military conflict because it’s small potatoes for us." He further added, "It’s not a big thing. We did Venezuela, and we did this," while engaging with cattle ranchers present for the signing of two executive orders related to beef processing.

The six-month-long engagement, which has claimed the lives of 18 US service members and thousands of Iranians, appears to have reached a stalemate. During this period, Tehran has notably disrupted shipping traffic within the vital Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, the Trump administration has intensified its efforts to minimize the conflict's significance, largely due to concerns that escalating fuel prices could jeopardize the Republican party's control of Congress in the forthcoming November midterm elections. This comes as oil prices have surged past $94 amidst the US-Iran tensions.

President Trump further clarified that the US was conducting "intermittent strikes" but insisted, "we’re not fighting right now." He reaffirmed his assertions that the United States maintained effective control over the Strait of Hormuz and had significantly weakened Iran's military capabilities. Trump proclaimed, "What we’ve done is amazing. We took over Venezuela and we have essentially taken over Iran." When challenged about labeling the conflict "small potatoes" given the loss of 18 service members, a visibly agitated Trump drew parallels between the Iran situation and the protracted US military campaigns in Vietnam and Afghanistan. He concluded by stating, "I don’t think it matters what you call it. What matters is the fact we have had tremendous success. We’ve stopped Iran from having a nuclear weapon."
