Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has declared his intention to avenge the death of his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asserting that retribution "must certainly" be carried out. This significant pronouncement marks Mojtaba Khamenei's initial public communication since the funeral rites for his father commenced a week ago. He indicated that the vengeance would encompass not only Iran but also "free people around the world."

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was tragically killed during a US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, which coincided with the onset of the ongoing war. In his statement, Mojtaba Khamenei affirmed, "We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraced killers." He further added, "Whether we are there or not, this will be accomplished, and soon every free person around the world will fulfill a part of this divine mission."

Since his appointment as supreme leader on March 8, Mojtaba Khamenei has not made any public appearances. Reports from senior sources suggest he sustained facial disfigurement and other injuries in the aforementioned airstrike. His continued absence has fueled considerable uncertainty across Iran, with some citizens expressing that the nation's new leader ought to appear publicly, even if injured.

This latest declaration follows a resurgence of hostilities between US and Iranian forces, which has cast doubt on a previously agreed ceasefire intended to conclude the four-month conflict. Despite the recent clashes, US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that both nations had consented to continue negotiations. Mojtaba Khamenei ascended to the position of supreme leader with the backing of the Revolutionary Guards, succeeding his father, who had governed Iran for 37 years and was interred at the country’s most sacred shrine after a state funeral.
