Macron's Syria Visit Marred by Blasts in Damascus

French President Emmanuel Macron has been confirmed safe by the Elysee Palace following reports of explosions in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Tuesday morning. The blasts occurred as Macron was in the city for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, at the presidential palace. According to a security source close to Macron, the explosions were caused by two explosive devices, resulting in several injuries. Despite the incident, Macron's visit is continuing as planned, with the French president set to travel to Turkey for the NATO summit afterwards. The explosions were reported near a hotel in central Damascus, with videos and images on social media showing plumes of smoke and flames rising from a vehicle. Syrian state television reported that al-Sharaa had welcomed Macron to the presidential palace, with Macron's officials stating that he did not hear the explosions while on his way to the meeting. Macron's visit to Syria marks a significant diplomatic engagement, as he is the first EU leader to visit the country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule. The recent violence highlights the volatile security situation in the capital, following a bomb blast at a crowded cafe in central Damascus earlier in July that killed at least nine people and injured 22 others, according to Syrian state media.
