Venezuela Quakes: 18-Day-Old Baby Miraculously Pulled from Debris After 32 Hours

A truly miraculous rescue unfolded in Venezuela as an 18-day-old infant was successfully pulled from the wreckage of a collapsed building, a staggering 32 hours after a pair of powerful earthquakes rocked a coastal city. The dramatic event, captured in a video shared widely on social media on Friday, showed dedicated rescuers working tirelessly under floodlights amidst the debris.
The footage depicted the emergency teams carefully navigating the fallen masonry in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit cities located north of the capital, Caracas. Cheers erupted late on Friday as the tiny survivor was brought out. The video further illustrated the delicate process as the baby, wrapped in a quilt, was passed from one rescuer to another, before being gently cleaned with tissues.
Andreina Quintero, the social media user who posted the compelling video, confirmed that the infant, despite being trapped for over a day and a half, appeared to be completely uninjured. The child's mother was subsequently rescued approximately an hour after her baby was found.
In a follow-up video posted later that Friday, Quintero showed the mother recuperating in a hospital. A medical staff member was heard reassuring her that the baby displayed no apparent injuries. The medic then suggested that the mother's quick thinking, by covering the child with her body or another protective item, likely played a crucial role in the infant's survival.
The twin earthquakes, striking on Wednesday with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 respectively, have had devastating consequences. The United Nations estimates that these seismic events could affect nearly 6.8 million people across Venezuela. Tragically, the disaster has resulted in at least 920 confirmed deaths, with thousands more reported injured or still missing.
