The Chinese government has taken a US-based scholar into custody, with accusations of espionage and compromising national security. According to reports, U Min Zin, who serves as a director at a think tank focused on Myanmar, was apprehended in the Chinese city of Kunming in early June. Prior to his arrest, sources had informed the New York Times about his disappearance. It is alleged that Min Zin was taken into custody at the airport while attending a meeting on June 3. This development is unusual, given that it is rare for China to arrest US citizens on national security charges. The detention occurs just weeks after US President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing, where he was received by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Additionally, Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to visit Beijing later this month. China has a close relationship with Myanmar's military government, which seized power in a coup in 2021. Min Zin, known for his involvement in Myanmar's 1988 pro-democracy movement, had fled to Thailand to evade arrest by the military government. He later relocated to the US for his studies and returned to Myanmar in 2010. Currently, Min Zin resides in Thailand but spends time in both the US and Myanmar. He is the executive director at the Myanmar Institute for Strategic and Policy Studies, a think tank based in Thailand that examines China's role in Myanmar. Min Zin is also pursuing his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. Following his arrest, Min Zin's family has expressed concern, and they are working with the US consulate in Guangzhou to address the situation. Min Zin was scheduled to speak at a conference in Kathmandu later this month.
