Ukraine Suffers Fatal Drone Attacks as World Leaders Meet to Pressure Russia

On Sunday, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drone strikes resulted in the deaths of two individuals. This development comes as global leaders convened in London to deliberate on increasing pressure on Moscow due to its ongoing four-year conflict with Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to engage in discussions with the leaders of France, Germany, and Britain on Sunday, focusing on the path forward as Russia encounters military setbacks in its invasion of Ukraine. According to a statement released by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine on Telegram, a Russian drone strike claimed the life of a 56-year-old minibus driver in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region. In a separate incident, a 59-year-old man lost his life in the central Dnipropetrovsk region when Russian drones and aerial bombs targeted two districts, as reported by regional military chief Oleksandr Ganzha on Telegram. The attacks also resulted in injuries to a 35-year-old man and damage to infrastructure, according to Ganzha. Ukraine has recaptured more territory than it lost to Russian forces in May for the second consecutive month, based on an analysis of data from the Institute for the Study of War. The Russian offensive has led to rising prices, tax increases, borrowing costs at a two-decade high, business closures, and labor shortages, placing the economy in a challenging situation since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In an open letter to Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Thursday, Zelensky proposed a face-to-face meeting and expressed his willingness to implement a 'full ceasefire'. However, Putin, speaking at Russia's flagship economic forum on Friday, dismissed suggestions that the Russian economy had collapsed, stating that 'we have descended to the same level at which Eurozone countries have been experiencing growth for the past few years'.
