Britain Faces Greatest Threat in Decades, Says Top Military Chief

The United Kingdom is at a critical juncture, confronting the most perilous period in decades due to escalating threats from Russia, according to the country's chief of defence staff, Sir Richard Knighton. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Sir Richard cautioned that the nation must be prepared to make different choices and set new priorities in response to the growing threats. He emphasized that the current era is marked by the most danger he has witnessed in his 35-year career, underscoring the need for enhanced capability and readiness of the armed forces, alongside allies, to deter adversaries. Sir Richard highlighted Russia's tactics, including cyber attacks, technology smuggling, reckless sabotage, and assassination attempts, as methods used to challenge Western defences. He also stressed the importance of increasing investment in drone technology, noting that such systems will play a crucial role in the future of warfare. The urgency of the threat was recently underscored by a Russian drone attack on a block of flats in Romania, prompting widespread international condemnation. In response, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to unveil the UK's long-awaited defence investment plan before the Nato summit scheduled for July 7 in Turkey. The plan, which has faced delays due to disagreements over costs, is expected to provide a significant boost to defence spending, valued at over £18 billion. However, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and the Prime Minister are reportedly considering reducing the amount due to concerns about affordability. Speaking during a visit to a defence contractor in Wiltshire, Sir Keir emphasized that the investment plan will provide the necessary funding for the capability outlined in last year's Strategic Defence Review, representing another step up in military expenditure.
