The Kaduna State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a stern warning to residents, advising them against the practice of self-medication. This caution comes in the wake of a confirmed case of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Mr. Danjuma Makama, the State Director for NOA, conveyed this important message in a statement released on Thursday. The statement was disseminated to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by Linda Michael, who serves as the Head of Communication and Media for the NOA Kaduna State Directorate.

Makama specifically urged individuals to refrain from hiding any potential symptoms of the disease or attempting to treat themselves without professional medical guidance. Instead, he stressed the critical importance of immediately reporting any suspected symptoms to the closest available health facility. For further assistance and guidance, residents were encouraged to contact the Kaduna State Emergency Disease Surveillance Lines, available at 08036045755 and 07031992126. Furthermore, he appealed to the public to fully cooperate with health personnel during essential processes such as screening, surveillance, and contact tracing.

"Public safety depends on accurate information and responsible action," Makama emphasized. He added, "By staying informed and cooperating with health authorities, we can protect ourselves, our families, and our communities."

The agency also advised the populace to rely solely on information validated by relevant health authorities, cautioning against any actions that could hinder ongoing efforts to prevent the disease's spread. They reiterated the necessity of observing preventive measures, recognizing possible EVD symptoms, and reporting any suspected cases without delay to health authorities.

According to reports from NAN, Ebola is described as a severe and often fatal illness. Its transmission occurs through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected individuals or animals. The virus can also be contracted via contact with contaminated surfaces and materials, underscoring the vital role of personal hygiene and minimizing exposure as key preventive strategies.

Common symptoms associated with Ebola include a sudden onset of fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, general weakness, fatigue, and a sore throat. Other manifestations may involve vomiting, diarrhoea, unexplained bleeding, and bruising.
