The tennis star is widely recognized for her striking outfits worn during matches.

During her initial US Open match against Anastasia Zakharova, Osaka captured significant attention with a hooded white gown. Beneath this outer garment, she sported an all-black basketball-inspired ensemble as she stepped onto the court. Her appearance was further enhanced by braided hair and a headband, a deliberate homage to former NBA icon Allen Iverson, whom she lauded as a 'trailblazer' in the realm of fashion.

In her most recent outing, Osaka donned an ornate coat at the start of her last-16 match against Elena Rybakina, a match she ultimately lost. Taking to social media on Wednesday, Osaka responded to the criticisms leveled against her sartorial selections. She conveyed that she is unconcerned with being the pioneer in challenging established norms, even if it draws negative feedback.

"I don’t mind being the first to do something and getting trashed for it,” she penned. Osaka drew parallels between the current scrutiny over her outfits and the backlash she encountered in 2021 when she openly discussed her mental health struggles. At that time, she withdrew from the French Open after declining to participate in mandatory media engagements, citing severe anxiety and depression.

"This happened when I talked about mental health and for some reason it’s happening with my clothes lol,” Osaka further wrote. The Japanese athlete also highlighted her Haitian ancestry, explaining that her inclination towards bold self-expression is an intrinsic part of her identity. "I’m literally Haitian it’s in my blood to be this way,” she asserted, adding that facing criticism is a worthwhile trade-off if it ensures "the people after me have an easier path."

Osaka's remarks underscore her consistent approach to defying conventions, both within and outside the tennis arena.
