Diphtheria Surge: Kano Establishes New Containment Committee

The Kano State administration has established a specialized panel tasked with probing reported instances of diphtheria and associated fatalities across various parts of the state, particularly within the Rano Local Government Area. This initiative aims to curtail the disease's further dissemination.

Announced on Saturday, this committee's mandate involves orchestrating the state's strategic response, confirming the authenticity of reported infections and deaths, and swiftly implementing protocols to avert transmission to adjacent local government areas. Mr. Nabilusi Abubakar Ahmad, the Public Relations Officer for the Kano State Ministry of Health, confirmed this development in a statement issued on the same day.

The state government emphasized that “The constitution of the committee is aimed at strengthening and coordinating ongoing response efforts, conducting a comprehensive assessment of the outbreak, and taking immediate measures to prevent further spread.”

Leading this critical body is Professor Muhammad Abbas, who serves as the Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control. Professor Salisu A. Ibrahim, the Director-General of the State Primary Healthcare Management Board, is a key member. Other distinguished members include Dr. Mansur M. Nagoda, Executive Secretary of the Hospitals Management Board; Dr. Tijjani Habibu, Director of Disease Control at SPHCMB; Dr. Ibrahim Aliyu Umar, Director of Public Health within the Ministry of Health; and Sulaiman Iliyasu Hamisu, the State Epidemiologist at KNCDC. Additionally, representatives from the Kano, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya emirate councils are part of the committee, with Mr. Hussaini Rufai from the KNCDC Monitoring and Evaluation Unit acting as secretary.

The committee has been specifically charged with conducting a thorough investigation into the outbreak to validate reported diphtheria cases and fatalities across affected local government areas. It is also tasked with enhancing disease surveillance mechanisms and ensuring that Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers provide daily reports. According to the official statement, “The committee will conduct a comprehensive outbreak investigation to verify reported diphtheria cases and deaths across affected local government areas.”

Furthermore, its responsibilities extend to establishing a centralized data registry for both suspected and confirmed cases, pinpointing immunization deficiencies through intensified community outreach and awareness campaigns, and guaranteeing the availability and prompt distribution of crucial medical supplies to designated treatment facilities. The government reiterated, “The committee will establish a centralised data registry for effective tracking of suspected and confirmed cases and identify immunisation gaps through intensified community mobilisation and sensitisation.”

A core aspect of the committee's operation involves close collaboration with healthcare professionals in the impacted communities. This is intended to bolster information exchange, facilitate early detection of cases, and improve patient management strategies. The statement affirmed, “The committee will work closely with health personnel in affected local government areas to ensure a seamless and coordinated response, rapid information sharing, early detection of cases and effective management of the outbreak.”

Citizens, community leaders, and other stakeholders have been strongly encouraged by the government to promptly report any suspected cases, actively support vaccination initiatives, and cooperate fully with health authorities. It further stated, “Residents, community leaders and other stakeholders are urged to cooperate fully with health authorities by promptly reporting suspected cases and supporting ongoing public health interventions.”

The state government reassured its populace of its unwavering dedication to safeguarding public health, pledging to undertake all necessary measures to contain the outbreak and prevent its proliferation throughout Kano State.
