Red Cross Boosts Sokoto's Malnutrition Battle with 700 RUTF Cartons

To bolster the fight against childhood malnutrition in Sokoto State, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Sokoto Branch, working with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), recently presented 700 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to the state government. This significant contribution, part of the Malnutrition Emergency Appeal Programme (MEAP), was officially transferred on Friday to the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SSPHCDA). The agency is tasked with ensuring these nutritional supplements reach vulnerable children in the three local government areas currently targeted by the MEAP: Sokoto North, Sokoto South, and Wamakko.

During the handover ceremony, a representative from the SSPHCDA, accepting the provisions on behalf of the state administration, expressed profound gratitude to both the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the IFRC. The official acknowledged their consistent efforts in addressing the challenge of malnutrition within Sokoto. An assurance was also given that the RUTF donation would be strictly utilized for its intended purpose, focusing on distribution to children specifically identified as needing nutritional aid. The representative stated, “We appreciate the Nigerian Red Cross Society and IFRC for this important intervention and their continued support to the state in addressing malnutrition.” Furthermore, the official affirmed, “We assure you that these commodities will be properly utilised and distributed to the targeted beneficiaries in the implementing local government areas.”

According to the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Sokoto Branch, this recent donation is an integral part of its wider humanitarian strategy. This strategy aims to mitigate the severe effects of malnutrition on children and to fortify community-level initiatives against the issue.
