Deadly Hotel Blaze Claims Nine Lives in India's Kolkata

A tragic hotel fire in Kolkata, India, on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals, with several others sustaining injuries, a senior official from the fire department confirmed. Anuj Sharma, who serves as the fire services director for West Bengal state, informed AFP that “Nine people were killed, including a child, in the fire that broke out early on Wednesday.” He further elaborated on the challenging conditions, stating that “Thick smoke enveloped the hotel. Some victims were found in the bathrooms.”
Initial findings suggest that an air conditioner within the budget hotel might have exploded, triggering the inferno, according to Sharma. He added that a total of nine people — comprising six men, two women, and a child — were successfully rescued from the building and subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.
Santosh Pathak, a member of West Bengal’s ruling political party, indicated that some of the victims appeared to be Bangladeshi nationals who had traveled to Kolkata specifically for medical attention. Pathak told reporters, “We are trying to confirm the nationality of the victims.” At the time the fire erupted, approximately 60 guests were staying at the hotel.
Building fires are a recurring problem across India, often attributed to insufficient firefighting infrastructure and a widespread disregard for established safety protocols.
