Hypertension Cases Soar in Bayelsa, Govt Sounds Alarm

The Bayelsa State Ministry of Health has expressed deep concern over the increasing number of residents living with hypertension. According to the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, many people in the state are not in the habit of checking their blood pressure regularly, and as a result, they are often diagnosed with the condition after it has already led to complications. This revelation was made by Brisibe on Thursday during a media interaction where he presented the ministry's mid-year scorecard. Data from a previous screening exercise for hypertension and diabetes revealed that about 10 to 15 per cent of those screened had the condition, with older residents and males being more affected. Brisibe stated that the figures should serve as a warning to both residents and health authorities, given that hypertension can go undetected for a long time. He noted that the prevalence of hypertension was higher among people above 45 and 50 years old, and also higher among males. The commissioner emphasized that late detection and denial by some patients are major challenges in managing hypertension and diabetes. To address this issue, the ministry is incorporating hypertension screening into routine healthcare services, and residents can have their blood pressure checked for free at designated emergency ambulances in Yenagoa. The service will also be extended to riverine communities through the state's boat ambulance system. Brisibe advised residents, especially those above 40, to regularly check their blood pressure and blood glucose levels. He also urged those diagnosed with non-communicable diseases to adhere to their medications, follow medical advice, eat healthy, and exercise regularly. The state government plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Information to raise public awareness about hypertension through radio jingles and billboards.
