Benue State Probes Reported Mpox Case in Konshisha LGA

Authorities in Benue State have initiated an inquiry into a potential Mpox infection identified within the Konshisha Local Government Area. Dr. Paul Ogwuche, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, confirmed this development on Saturday, addressing earlier reports of a suspected individual at the Tyokula Achihi residence in Korinya, Konshisha LGA.

According to Dr. Ogwuche, his ministry promptly activated its disease surveillance network, adhering strictly to established public health guidelines, and dispatched personnel to the affected vicinity. In an official statement released to reporters in Makurdi, the Commissioner cautioned the public against making premature assumptions when experiencing skin rashes and fever, explaining that such symptoms are common to various medical ailments. He emphasized the critical need for laboratory tests to confirm any diagnosis of Mpox.

The statement further elaborated, stating: “The Director of Public Health received instructions to coordinate with the State Epidemiologist, who subsequently dispatched the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) for Konshisha Local Government Area to the reported site for a direct evaluation, inquiry into the case, and collection of necessary clinical specimens for laboratory analysis. As of now, no Mpox epidemic has been verified within Benue State. It is crucial to highlight that skin eruptions and elevated body temperature can be indicators of multiple health issues, and a definitive Mpox diagnosis necessitates laboratory verification.”

Dr. Ogwuche affirmed that the state’s disease monitoring system is fully operational across all 23 local government areas. He also mentioned that the ministry is maintaining a close working relationship with key organizations such as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other collaborating partners to guarantee swift identification and management of any public health emergencies.

The Commissioner appealed to citizens to maintain composure and refrain from circulating unconfirmed reports that could trigger undue alarm. The statement concluded by advising: “We strongly advise anyone presenting with a fever alongside unexplained rashes or blisters to promptly visit the nearest healthcare facility for a thorough medical assessment and to refrain from close physical interaction until evaluated by medical experts.”

He assured the public that the ministry would provide updates as soon as investigation outcomes and laboratory results are finalized. Dr. Ogwuche concluded by stating that should the findings confirm Mpox or any other significant public health condition, suitable response strategies would be deployed in accordance with national directives.
