A recent query issued to a nurse at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Kaduna has sparked outrage among healthcare professionals. The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has condemned the action, describing it as an abuse of administrative power and a clear violation of the nurse's constitutional right to freedom of expression. The query, which was issued on July 20, 2026, accused the nurse, Mrs. Mary Lally Anthony, of making uncomplimentary remarks about the hospital and its Medical Director on social media. According to the ENF, this move is part of a larger pattern of intimidation and victimization of healthcare workers who dare to express their opinions or participate in union activities. The Forum's National Coordinator, Thomas Abiodun Olamide, stated that the disciplinary action is 'oppressive, intimidating, and a dangerous attempt to silence workers who exercise their constitutional rights.' The ENF argued that the right to freedom of expression, as guaranteed by Section 39(1) of the Constitution, extends to public servants and that lawful criticism of government institutions or public officials does not automatically amount to misconduct. The group also expressed concern over the monitoring of workers' private social media activities, which they believe creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. This development is not an isolated incident, as the ENF recalled the suspension of the Chairperson of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna Branch, which they alleged was a clear case of victimization for his union activities. The ENF is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Mrs. Anthony, an end to the harassment and victimization of healthcare workers at the hospital, and the reversal of the suspension imposed on the NANNM branch chairperson. They are also calling for an independent investigation into allegations of abuse of office and anti-union practices by the Medical Director. The Forum urged the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant bodies to intervene and ensure that the rights of healthcare workers are protected. The ENF's statement emphasized that the dignity of nurses is non-negotiable and that healthcare workers deserve respect, lawful treatment, and protection, not intimidation and repression.
