Kaduna State Alerts Public to Diphtheria Outbreak, Children Most Affected

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has issued an urgent public health warning following an increase in diphtheria cases across various parts of the state. The Ministry confirmed that a significant number of these reported infections are among children, who are considered particularly vulnerable to the disease. In a statement released on Saturday, health authorities indicated that they have ramped up efforts to control the escalating outbreak.
Parents, guardians, educational institutions, and community leaders have been strongly advised to implement immediate measures to safeguard children. Diphtheria, identified as a highly contagious bacterial infection, predominantly targets the nose and throat. Its transmission occurs through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, direct contact with infected individuals, or by sharing personal items contaminated with the bacteria.
Health officials highlighted the severe risks faced by unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children, warning that they are most susceptible to developing serious, potentially fatal complications if the illness remains untreated. Residents are urged to be vigilant for symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, chills, difficulty swallowing, persistent cough, and breathing difficulties. Other critical signs include swelling of the neck, often described as 'bull neck,' and the appearance of a thick grey or white membrane covering the throat or tonsils.
The Ministry underscored the importance of early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention for improved survival rates. It implored parents and caregivers to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility for anyone exhibiting these symptoms, cautioning against self-medication or reliance on traditional remedies.
As part of its comprehensive response, the Ministry has called on parents to ensure their children receive all scheduled routine immunisations. For those who have missed their vaccinations, free catch-up services are available at the nearest Primary Health Care (PHC) centre. Additionally, the public is advised to maintain excellent hand hygiene, practice proper cough etiquette, and avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms.
The Kaduna State Ministry of Health is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board, various development partners, and healthcare facilities. This collaborative effort aims to bolster disease surveillance, broaden immunisation coverage, facilitate treatment, and ultimately contain the outbreak. While assuring residents to remain calm, the Ministry reiterated that prompt reporting of suspected cases and complete vaccination are the most effective strategies to prevent diphtheria's spread. They concluded with the message, "Together, we can stop diphtheria," urging anyone experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical help.
