Full Story

Hollywood actor Jesse Eisenberg has revealed that his personal connection to musical theatre served as the primary inspiration for his latest directorial and writing project, *The Debut*. The 43-year-old star, renowned for roles in blockbuster films like *Zombieland* and *Now You See Me*, and an Oscar-nominated performance as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 hit *The Social Network*, shared his motivation for the film.

Eisenberg, who has also helmed other projects such as *A Real Pain* and *When You Finish Saving The World*, explained to the Press Association news agency ahead of *The Debut*'s UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, that the film tells the story of "a very shy woman who finds her family and her home and her voice in the world of musical theatre." He added that while the specific setting could have varied, he chose musical theatre because "it’s the world I know, and it’s the same thing that happened to me. For some people who are so in need of something, almost anything can fill that hole.”

The upcoming musical-comedy features acclaimed actress Julianne Moore in the lead role, portraying a housewife who develops an intense fascination with her part in a local community theatre production. Her character subsequently falls under the sway of the overbearing director, Jerry, played by Paul Giamatti.

Discussing his approach to directing, Eisenberg stated, “I love anybody who is working hard and doing their own process.” He cited an example from his previous film, mentioning how lead actor Kieran Culkin's unique method involved "not sleeping at night," yet he delivered an "amazing" performance. Eisenberg also commended the cast of *The Debut*, noting their dedication. “They work really hard, but they don’t tell you about it. They’re not the kind of people who go on set and tell you how hard they’ve worked, they just come and do a great job and you trust they’re doing whatever they need,” he remarked.

Julianne Moore, an Oscar winner known for her role in *Still Alice*, also shared her perspective with PA, emphasizing the story's significance. The American actress highlighted that her character "finds community for the first time," discovering "a place where she belongs" through her creative journey. Moore concluded, “It’s this wonderful thing to find yourself and find other people – because really that’s where we thrive, in relationship to others.”

*The Debut* is slated for release in UK cinemas on January 15, 2027.
