The music world is in shock following the untimely death of Nigerian-British singer and songwriter, Talay Riley. Riley, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was stabbed in East London, prompting a murder investigation by the police. The incident occurred on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown at about 9am on Friday, according to reports from the Newham Recorder. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the 35-year-old musician succumbed to his injuries. The Specialist Crime Command has launched a homicide investigation into the killing. In a statement, Riley's family expressed their grief, describing the loss as an 'overwhelming sadness.' They remembered him as a Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling songwriter and artist, whose humour, generosity, and presence would be deeply missed by loved ones. The family also thanked the public for their support during this difficult period. Riley built a successful career spanning over a decade in the R&B industry, securing a publishing deal with Global Publishing at the age of 18 and later signing with Jive/Sony Records. His brother, music producer Scribz Riley, paid an emotional tribute to him on Instagram, describing him as a mentor, inspiration, and 'a light in so many people's lives.' Scribz wrote, 'My heart is shattered! This doesn’t feel real. It feels like a bad dream. Just before he went to sleep we spoke about the future, staying positive and about everything we still had left to do. I never imagined that would be our last conversation.' Among those who paid tribute to Riley were rapper Stormzy and singer Craig David, who worked with him on his 2018 album, The Time Is Now. Riley's legacy will continue to live on through his music, his family, his friends, and everyone blessed enough to have known him.
