The price of Brent crude oil has seen a significant increase, surpassing $88 per barrel, due to renewed optimism that the United States and Iran may soon reach an agreement. This potential deal could ease tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil supplies. According to data from Oilprice.com, Brent crude rose by $0.95, or 1.08%, to $88.67 per barrel, while the United States West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price also increased by $0.96, or 1.17%, to $83.09 per barrel. These developments come amid reports that Pakistan and Qatar are mediating discussions between the US and Iran, with Pakistan's Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, stating that 'things are shaping up again in favour of a peace arrangement or a deal.' Additionally, Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted that separate discussions between Oman and Iran regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz are at an advanced stage. However, Iran has maintained its stance that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless the US changes its position and accepts Tehran's conditions for ending the conflict. The newly appointed secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, emphasized that 'as long as America does not change its behaviour and does not accept Iran's conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened.' He further stated that 'America must end the war, pay Iran's frozen assets, the war must end throughout the region, including in Lebanon and Gaza.' The situation remains uncertain, with reports of new attacks on shipping in regional waters, underscoring the need for a resolution to the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital energy corridor, and its continued closure has significant implications for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. US President Donald Trump has described Iran as 'devious negotiators' while discussing his options in the conflict. The ongoing tensions have resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and have been a major concern for the global economy.
