ASUU Ends Industrial Action: LASU, LASUED, LASUSTECH Lecturers Back to Class

Full Story
Academic activities are set to recommence without delay at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). This development comes after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) officially called off its industrial action.
The union conveyed this decision on Friday through a joint communiqué, bearing the signatures of Olusegun Babalola, who coordinates the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee; Grace Abimbola, the Acting Chairman for ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUSTECH. According to a TVC News report on Saturday, this resolution was reached subsequent to negotiations concerning staff welfare and unresolved agreements between the union and the Lagos State Government.
The joint statement highlighted, “Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations.” The cessation of the strike is anticipated to offer considerable relief to students and their parents, who have faced disruptions in their academic calendars across these three state-owned tertiary institutions.
ASUU extended its gratitude to various entities including the media, civil society groups, traditional leaders, students, parents, and other interested parties for their backing throughout the negotiation process. Specifically, the union recognized the instrumental roles played by the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern, and the Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, lauding their advocacy as crucial for promoting high-quality public tertiary education. Furthermore, the lecturers applauded traditional rulers for their mediation efforts and commended both students and parents for their remarkable patience and understanding during the period of the industrial action.
In a directive to its members, ASUU urged an immediate return to teaching duties, simultaneously reiterating its dedication to fostering academic excellence and delivering superior university education. The statement affirmed, “As our members return to the classrooms with immediate effect, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence and quality university education.” Nevertheless, the union indicated its intention to maintain dialogue with the Lagos State Government to guarantee the complete settlement of all remaining matters concerning its members' welfare benefits.
