LASCOPA Launches Toll-Free Reporting Channel for Bad Products in Lagos

Full Story
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has introduced a dedicated toll-free telephone line, encouraging residents across the state to promptly report any instances of fake, expired, adulterated, or counterfeit goods.
This announcement was made by Mr. Afolabi Solebo, the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of LASCOPA, in a statement released by the agency on Tuesday in Lagos. The statement, signed by Adesile Rufai, the Assistant Director of Public Affairs, urged the public to 'tell it to LASCOPA' by reporting consumer-related infractions via the new toll-free consumer helpline: 080 0005 2726.
Mr. Solebo highlighted that this toll-free number offers consumers a direct and easily accessible avenue to report violations, seek guidance, and receive swift intervention from the agency. Additionally, he noted that complaints can also be lodged through LASCOPA's official email at consumer.protection@lagosstate.gov.ng, or via their social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), all accessible with the handle @lascopa.
The LASCOPA boss stressed the importance of residents not remaining silent when they encounter consumer violations. He emphasized the necessity of formally reporting such cases directly to LASCOPA, rather than relying solely on social media for redress. While acknowledging that social media can raise awareness, Mr. Solebo stated that reports made to the agency must be supported by verifiable evidence to facilitate thorough investigation and enforcement actions.
He specified that such evidence should include receipts, invoices, photographs or videos of the products, product labels, proof of payment, and screenshots of transactions, advertisements, or conversations with sellers.
The helpline can be utilized to report a wide range of concerns, including fake and counterfeit products, expired or adulterated items, defective goods, misleading advertisements, and unfair business practices. Consumers are also encouraged to report poor services, disputes arising from online shopping, and any other suspected violations of consumer protection laws.
Mr. Solebo advised consumers to meticulously verify product details, prices, seller information, and terms and conditions before making any payments, especially for online purchases. He also urged residents to carefully inspect product labels, confirming crucial details such as the manufacturer's information, manufacturing and expiry dates, batch numbers, ingredients, and usage instructions before purchasing any product.
“Timely, credible complaints help us detect violations and take enforcement action,” Solebo stated, adding that “Consumer protection is a shared responsibility – government, businesses and consumers.” He concluded by calling on Lagos residents to remain vigilant and actively participate in safeguarding the marketplace from practices that could compromise consumers’ rights and safety, reiterating, “If you see it, question it. If you suspect it, report it. Tell it to LASCOPA.”
