Veteran Actor RMD Calls for Solutions, Not Condemnation from Nigerians

Renowned actor and filmmaker, Richard Mofe-Damijo, widely recognized as RMD, has appealed to Nigerians to cease their constant criticism of the country and instead focus on contributing solutions to its various challenges. He highlighted that the international image of Nigeria impacts every citizen, emphasizing that everyone bears the cost of how the nation is viewed globally.

RMD conveyed this message on Tuesday during the inaugural Pivot Nigeria conference, a thought-leadership event themed "The Reputation Dividend: Who Pays for Nigeria’s Perception?" He stated, "We are too quick to condemn us. There are problems but we need to fix them. Don’t stand and just criticise and then proffer no solution." He further added that while citizens must hold leaders accountable, they must also acknowledge their own role in shaping Nigeria’s international standing. "We don’t hold leadership accountable enough. If we do, then when they come in there, they know that they are responsible for the people that they represent." He reminded attendees, "Just remember who you are. You are an ambassador, not just for yourself, your parents or your school, but ultimately for your country."

He cited the global triumphs of Nollywood and Afrobeats, alongside the achievements of entrepreneurs like Aliko Dangote, as evidence that Nigerians are actively building the nation's reputation capital from within. However, RMD cautioned against expecting immediate transformation, noting, "We are a country, we’re a work in progress, and we must continue just doing the work."

Also speaking at the gathering, Victoria Uwadoka, the convener and Lead Consultant at HighStakes PR Professionals, underscored the importance of treating reputation as a vital national asset. "Reputation is actually very, very critical for us as citizens and as a nation. The media has a responsibility. Individuals have a responsibility. Institutions have a responsibility. Corporate Nigeria has a responsibility. The government has a responsibility."

Uwadoka urged for an honest and balanced portrayal of Nigeria, acknowledging both its strengths and weaknesses. "Tell the truth about where we are. Be balanced. There’s not only bad about us, but there’s also good as well." She stressed that while citizens and organizations have a role, the government must also foster an enabling environment through effective policies, robust infrastructure, and strong institutions.

The 2026 Pivot Nigeria conference took place at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, bringing together prominent figures from the creative, media, and communications sectors to discuss how Nigeria's reputation influences its citizens, businesses, and national prospects.
