Kogi Varsity Expels Six Students for Off-Campus Exam Rewrite

The Senate of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in Anyigba, Kogi State, has taken stern measures, expelling six students from the institution. This disciplinary action stems from their involvement in severe examination misconduct, specifically for rewriting an examination at a lecturer's private residence.

These decisions were among the key outcomes of the university’s 167th Regular Senate Meeting, which took place on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in the university auditorium. Uredo Omale, the Public Relations Officer for PAAU, released a statement on Monday to announce this development.

According to Omale, the university management initiated action on July 1, 2026, acting on credible intelligence that a lecturer was orchestrating students to rewrite an examination at his home. This intelligence led to the apprehension of Dr. Maji Okpanachi, a lecturer from the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, along with several students. They were arrested by the university's security operatives at Dr. Okpanachi's private residence, located behind the Police Area Command Office on Idah Road, Anyigba, where various incriminating exhibits were also recovered.

The security report was subsequently forwarded to the Examination Misconduct Committee. The committee’s findings, which were thoroughly reviewed by the Senate during its 167th meeting, corroborated the initial security report. It further included confessional statements from both the implicated lecturer and the students, alongside other available records. These confirmed that the affected students had indeed rewritten the Course: BOT102 (Introduction to Plant Science) examination at Dr. Okpanachi's residence, days after the original examination date. The committee's investigation also revealed that each student involved had paid Dr. Maji Okpanachi a sum of N10,000 for this illicit opportunity.

In addition to the student expulsions, the Senate has also approved the referral of Dr. Okpanachi to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee. This move is for appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against him, in accordance with the university’s established rules and regulations governing staff conduct.
