TETFund Unveils N10bn Research Grant for 2026 Cycle: How to Participate

Nigeria's Federal Government has given its nod to a N10 billion allocation for the 2026 National Research Fund Grant, managed by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Through a recent call for concept notes, TETFund announced that these funds are earmarked to back research initiatives spanning 30 key thematic areas. These areas fall under three broad categories: Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; and Cross-Cutting fields.

This upcoming 2026 grant cycle builds on the achievements of the 2025 cycle, which saw approximately N6.09 billion distributed to facilitate 174 distinct research projects.

TETFund clarified that the initial step for securing the 2026 NRF grant involves Principal Investigators (PIs) submitting concept notes for their proposed research. Only PIs whose concept notes pass evaluation and are deemed viable for funding will then be advanced to the stage of submitting comprehensive full proposals.

Regarding eligibility, TETFund stated that academic staff in Nigeria's public tertiary institutions are welcome to apply. The agency particularly encourages collaborative, interdisciplinary research involving experts from diverse fields. The Principal Investigator is designated as the team leader, bearing full responsibility and accountability for the research execution. Furthermore, TETFund mandates that the PI must be affiliated with an institution, which will act as the coordinating body and ensure the judicious use of the allocated funds.

The entire application procedure is digital. Qualified Principal Investigators should access the TETFund National Research Fund portal at nrf.tetfund.gov.ng. This platform will provide instructions for preparing and submitting concept notes, and later, full research proposals if the initial concept notes are approved. Prospective applicants are advised to thoroughly review the Research Brief and application Guidelines prior to submitting their concept notes. The National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee will undertake the evaluation of all submitted concept notes.

Principal Investigators whose concept notes are successful will receive notifications and invitations to prepare and submit their complete proposals online. For any proposal that passes screening and is deemed fundable, the PI, along with at least one team member, will be required to defend their project before the committee. Ultimately, proposals that are successfully defended will be forwarded to the TETFund Board of Trustees for final approval and subsequent release of funds.

Regarding timelines, TETFund announced that the portal for concept note submissions will become active on August 31, 2026. The absolute deadline for submitting these notes is October 15, 2026, Nigerian time, with a strict emphasis from the fund that no extensions will be granted.

A total of 30 priority research areas have been outlined, categorised into three main groups:

* **Humanities and Social Sciences:** This category encompasses Citizenship and National Integration, Conflict, Defence and Security, Economic Development and Globalisation, Education and Human Capital, Gender, Equity and Social Inclusion, Governance, Politics, Law and Ethics, History, Culture and Identities, Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology and Business Interface, Languages, Literatures and Media, Population and Migration, Social Development and Welfare, and Tourism, Sports and Recreation.

* **Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI):** Areas here include Agriculture and Food Security, Geosciences, Health and Social Welfare, Industry and Innovation, Information Technology, Computing and Telecommunications, Power and Energy, Science and Engineering, Space Science and Technology, Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Terrestrial Ecosystems, Transport and Infrastructure, and Water and Sanitation.

* **Cross-Cutting:** This final group covers Blue Economy, Clean and Affordable Energy, Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation, Environment, Housing, Urban and Regional Development, Innovation and Technology in National Defence Capabilities, Resource Governance, and National System of Innovation.
