Gombe State University ASUU Halts Strike, Gives Govt Till October 2026

Full Story
The Gombe State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has temporarily called off its impending comprehensive and indefinite industrial action. This decision provides the Gombe State Government and the university administration a timeframe until October 2026 to fulfill the commitments previously agreed upon with the union.
This resolution was formalized following the union's congress meeting held on Friday, August 21, 2026, and bears the signatures of the branch's chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and its secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.
According to the union, their congress reviewed a communication from the Gombe State Government concerning the initiation of a new salary structure for academic personnel. Additionally, they considered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) finalized with the university management regarding the settlement of members' unpaid entitlements.
After thorough discussions, the union's congress chose to defer the planned strike. This move is intended to grant both the state government and the university management an opportunity to prove their dedication to the agreed terms. A statement from ASUU clarified, stating, “The Congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026.”
However, ASUU issued a caution, emphasizing that this suspension is not absolute but conditional. The union made it clear that if the stipulated agreements are not honored within the given timeframe, the industrial action would be reinstated. The statement further warned, “The Congress also resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action in the event of a failure to implement the content of the documents.”
