Nigeria has once again emerged as Africa's foremost recipient of the highly sought-after Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarships, with 89 Nigerian students securing full funding for the 2026 academic year. This significant achievement was revealed by Gautier Mignot, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, during the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Pre-Departure Orientation event in Abuja on Sunday, where beneficiaries were preparing for their postgraduate studies in various European countries.

Ambassador Mignot elaborated that a total of 163 Nigerian students gained admission into Erasmus Mundus master’s programmes this year. Out of these, 89 successfully obtained the coveted fully funded scholarships. This accomplishment positions Nigeria not only as the leading African nation but also among the top five globally for programme admissions, alongside countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and the United States, a feat also achieved in 2024. He quoted, "This year we have about 163 Nigerian students admitted into these master’s programmes. This places Nigeria again, like in 2024, as the top country in Africa and among the top five globally, together with Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and the United States."

The Ambassador highlighted an increase in awards for 2026, noting that the 89 recipients surpass the 81 Nigerians who received scholarships in 2025. He further mentioned that the programme is nearing a significant milestone of 1,000 Nigerian beneficiaries since its inception in the country in 2014. Mignot stated, "We have 89 scholarship awardees this year, up from 81 in 2025."

Mignot characterized the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme as one of the most fiercely competitive postgraduate scholarship initiatives worldwide. It provides comprehensive funding for education, allowing students to pursue studies at a minimum of two universities in two different European nations, culminating in the award of joint, double, or multiple master’s degrees.

He affirmed the European Union's commitment to ongoing collaboration with Nigeria. This partnership aims to broaden access to international educational prospects and enhance Nigeria's overall performance within the programme. Mignot expressed a desire for Nigeria to climb higher in the global rankings, stating, "We want Nigeria to get higher in the world ranking, to begin with, in the top three. We will work for that together with the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and Nigerian universities, and I’m sure we’ll get there."

Mignot further articulated that the Erasmus programme exemplifies the European Union’s dedication to fostering opportunities for bright young Nigerians by providing merit-based access to top-tier global education. He remarked, "It demonstrates the readiness of the EU to offer regular migration opportunities for young Nigerians to travel and study in Europe, based on their merit, capacity and abilities. It is indeed the concrete commitment of the EU to creating opportunities for Nigerian youth."

In his congratulatory message to the scholars, the ambassador implored them to be exemplary representatives of Nigeria throughout their studies in Europe and to return home enriched with the skills and knowledge essential for national progress. He advised, "You will be the ambassadors of Nigeria across Europe. And once you are back, we expect you to become true ambassadors of Europe in Nigeria."

Dr. Chinelo Nwosu, Director of the Directorate of Students, who represented Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, extended appreciation to the European Union for its consistent commitment to Nigeria's human capital development. She urged the scholarship recipients to maximize this chance and return to significantly contribute to Nigeria's advancement. Dr. Nwosu stated, "Go to school, come back and continue to develop Nigeria. Be good ambassadors of Nigeria wherever you are. Work hard, stay focused, keep out of trouble and remember where you are coming from."

Mrs. Liman K.A.A., Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards at the Federal Ministry of Education, speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, characterized the orientation event as more than just a send-off. She viewed it as a recognition of academic excellence and a testament to the lasting collaboration between Nigeria and the European Union in fostering education, research, innovation, and human capital development. Mrs. Liman advised the scholars, "Your conduct, character and academic performance will shape perceptions of Nigeria and inspire future generations of scholars. Be diligent in your studies, respectful of the different cultures you will encounter, and open to new ideas and perspectives."

Oluchi Yulis Myron, one of the scholarship beneficiaries slated to study cultural management, articulated that the award presents a chance for international exposure and acquiring expertise crucial for bolstering Nigeria's creative and cultural sectors. She shared her motivation, saying, "I wanted an opportunity not just to study abroad, but also to experience different cultures. One of the most exciting aspects of Erasmus Mundus is the mobility. You get to travel, meet new people, experience different cultures and even learn new languages."

Myron conveyed her hope that the program would furnish her with global best practices in heritage preservation, knowledge she intends to implement in Nigeria upon her return.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme stands as the European Union’s premier international scholarship scheme, offering fully financed postgraduate education at renowned universities across Europe. Participants are required to study in a minimum of two member countries, earning joint, double, or multiple master’s degrees upon completion. Since Nigerian students first joined the initiative in 2014, the nation has consistently maintained a high global ranking among participating countries. With 89 fully funded scholarships and 163 admissions secured for 2026, Nigeria has re-established itself as Africa's leading beneficiary, further solidifying its growing reputation for cultivating globally competitive professionals.
