In a decisive move aimed at alleviating the financial strain on families, the Ekiti State Government has given its nod for textbooks to be passed down and reused by younger siblings, contingent on the books being in good, usable condition. This announcement came from Mr. Bayode Ogunmola, the Permanent Secretary for the Ekiti State Ministry of Education, who also confirmed that the existing policy concerning textbook review cycles is still in effect.

Speaking from Ado Ekiti on Monday in an official statement, Ogunmola reiterated the government's stance, stating, “The government has approved the reuse of textbooks by younger siblings, provided the books remain in good condition, as part of efforts to make education more affordable for families across the state.” He further detailed the existing book review policy, explaining that “primary school textbooks are to be reviewed once every six years, while the review cycle for secondary school textbooks has been extended from once every three years to once every four years, subject to the guidelines of the National Educational Research and Development Council.”

Additionally, the ministry reaffirmed that “the ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils and students in kindergarten, nursery, primary and secondary schools, both public and private, remains in force.” This particular directive, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session, was put in place to ease the monetary strain on parents and guardians, while also addressing the social pressures and extravagant displays frequently linked with such celebratory events.

The education ministry emphasized that these regulations are non-negotiable and that there are no intentions to revoke them. As a result, it issued a clear instruction to all school proprietors, administrators, parents, and other relevant parties “to comply fully with the directives, warning that appropriate sanctions would be imposed on violators.” Concluding, the ministry expressed gratitude for the cooperation received from stakeholders and reaffirmed the Ekiti State government’s unwavering dedication to ensuring education is more accessible, affordable, and advantageous for all children within the state.
