The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has launched a comprehensive investigation into concerns regarding the alleged contamination of water supplied to some of its student hostels. This action follows numerous complaints from students, particularly those residing in female hostels, who reported experiencing health issues such as vomiting, stooling, and various skin reactions.

In an official statement released on Wednesday by Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the Head of the Communication Unit, the institution confirmed that it has initiated a thorough evaluation of its water supply infrastructure. This assessment includes conducting laboratory tests to ascertain the accuracy of the student reports and to identify any potential health hazards.

"The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to reports on the alleged contamination of the campus water supply in some halls of residence," the statement read. "We wish to assure all students, staff and members of the campus community that the matter is being treated with utmost urgency and seriousness."

According to the university management, relevant departments are actively engaged in a detailed assessment of the water system, including crucial water quality tests, to confirm the reports and pinpoint any risks. Furthermore, immediate interventions have been implemented to ensure the welfare, health, and safety of all students are adequately safeguarded. The management also pledged to provide regular updates via official channels as the investigation progresses.

Earlier on Tuesday, the University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU) confirmed its active engagement with university authorities and close monitoring of developments. In a statement signed by the ULSU President, Akinpelu Bolaji, the union noted that a definitive link between the reported illnesses and the hostel water supply had not yet been established.

"At this time, investigations are still ongoing, and no definitive link has been established between the reported health cases and the university’s hostel water supply," the union's statement affirmed. ULSU also disclosed that medical personnel at the University Medical Centre indicated that the cases presented so far were not medically linked to the water supply, with some affected students even residing off-campus.

However, the Students’ Union revealed that during an inspection prompted by reports of discoloured water in one of the hostel blocks, it was discovered that the issue originated from a specific borehole serving that block. As an immediate precautionary measure, the university swiftly suspended water supply from the affected borehole and arranged alternative water provisions for the residents of that block.

ULSU further stated that water samples have been collected from various hostels for laboratory analysis to determine their quality and safety. The results of these tests are anticipated within the next 48 hours. The union urged students to remain calm and refrain from making conclusions until the laboratory test results are officially released.
