UBA Strengthens Ties with UNILAG through New Innovation Hub

The partnership between United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reached new heights with the unveiling of a state-of-the-art innovation hub and business office. This milestone marks the latest chapter in a relationship that spans over six decades, dating back to 1965 when UBA became the first bank to establish a branch within a Nigerian university campus. The connection between the two institutions has been a defining feature of their shared history, with three UBA leaders, including Group Chairman Tony Elumelu, having direct academic ties to UNILAG. Elumelu, who earned his MSc in Economics from the university in 1988, has been instrumental in transforming UBA into a pan-African institution. The partnership has evolved significantly over the years, from the establishment of the UBA Professorial Chair in Finance at UNILAG in 1972 to the creation of scholarships, student-focused initiatives, and empowerment platforms. The new innovation hub, a four-floor complex, is designed to foster collaboration between industry and academia, providing internet connectivity to support research, learning, and innovation. According to the Vice Chancellor, Tony Elumelu is 'a son of this University,' and his journey serves as 'living proof that UNILAG produces not merely graduates, but world-changers.' UBA Group Managing Director Oliver Alawuba emphasized that 'the future belongs to institutions that do more than build structures; the future belongs to those that build minds, empower talent and create platforms where dreams become progress.' The UBA-UNILAG partnership has come a long way, from campus banking to innovation and research ecosystems, and this new development is a testament to their commitment to investing in minds, dreams, and possibilities. As the relationship continues to grow, it is clear that the UBA-UNILAG story is far from over.
