In a tragic incident reported by the Chicago Tribune, a transgender woman stands accused of a fatal assault on a man following an altercation that began with mockery over her use of a women's restroom at a McDonald's. Kelly Day, 32, was with her partner and 7-year-old stepson on Wednesday, October 7, when she allegedly carried out the deadly attack on 50-year-old Larry Young. The events reportedly unfolded hours after Day faced initial taunts regarding her gender identity at the fast-food establishment.

Assistant State's Attorney Sara Grgurovic informed the judge during a Saturday hearing at Central Bond Court that Mr. Young was not part of the initial group of individuals who had reportedly insulted Ms. Day earlier that day. However, prosecutors allege that Young later approached Day on a street in Chicago's Far South Side and made disparaging remarks about her gender. This reportedly provoked an 'extremely angry' reaction from Day, leading to a heated argument, with her partner attempting to de-escalate the situation.

According to authorities, Young then pushed Day and proceeded to walk away towards a gas station located across the street. Day, identified as a woman born male, reportedly expressed to her wife that she would not allow 'bullies' to mock her gender unpunished. Subsequently, prosecutors claim she pursued Young across the street, reigniting the confrontation.

The Chicago Tribune reported that surveillance video captured Day holding a knife over Young as he lay on the ground, then allegedly stabbing him 13 times in his head, neck, and upper shoulders. Prosecutors further stated that Day subsequently contacted 911, claiming self-defense against a 'pervert' who had injured her, before discarding the weapon and leaving the area. Law enforcement later recovered the knife, noting that a portion of its blade was missing.

Ms. Grgurovic detailed that Day later altered her account in another 911 call, asserting that her injury was a cooking accident. She was apprehended at a city hospital where she sought treatment for a cut on her finger. Following her arrest, Day reportedly informed investigators that Young had used a derogatory gay slur, gestured as if holding a gun, and threatened to arrange for her to be assaulted.

An autopsy conducted by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, as confirmed by prosecutors, determined that Young's death resulted from multiple sharp force injuries. The tip of the metal knife used in the attack was subsequently retrieved from his skull.
