HEDA: Diezani's UK Acquittal Fails to Halt Nigeria's Corruption Investigations

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) has emphasized that the recent acquittal of former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, by a court in the United Kingdom, should not signal the conclusion of ongoing corruption investigations and asset-recovery proceedings against her within Nigeria. Olanrewaju Suraju, HEDA's Chairman, issued a statement acknowledging that the June 17 decision by a Southwark Crown Court jury merits respect as a ruling specifically on the bribery allegations she faced in the UK. However, Suraju clarified that this verdict does not automatically dictate the outcome of separate legal actions or asset forfeiture processes under Nigerian jurisdiction.

The organization strongly advised the Nigerian government, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to persistently pursue all viable cases predicated on credible evidence, adherence to due process, and the rule of law. HEDA underscored the distinction between criminal prosecution and asset recovery as separate legal avenues, noting that an acquittal in a criminal matter does not necessarily resolve the status of assets implicated in distinct forfeiture proceedings.

Ms. Alison-Madueke was declared not guilty of six charges related to bribery in the UK following a trial that lasted five months. Concurrently, she is also embroiled in separate legal actions in Nigeria concerning assets allegedly linked to her. HEDA further articulated that Nigeria ought not to depend on foreign judicial systems to determine the pursuit of corruption allegations involving Nigerian citizens on home soil. Additionally, the group advocated for increased transparency from Nigerian authorities regarding the current status, location, and management of assets that have been recovered or forfeited in connection with the former minister.
