Erdogan Links Falling Birth Rates to LGBTQ+ as Turkish Police Target Activists, Businesses

Turkish authorities have initiated a wide-ranging operation across the nation, resulting in the arrest of 162 individuals identified as LGBTQ+ activists, organisations, and businesses. This past weekend, law enforcement officers conducted raids in 12 provinces as part of the government's "My Family is Safe" initiative, which officials claim is designed to safeguard traditional family values. Reports indicate that the operation specifically targeted establishments like gay bars, along with current and former members of prominent LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, as well as digital platforms and social media accounts associated with activists and organisations.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek disclosed that legal proceedings have commenced against the 162 suspects, nine associations, and 13 businesses, facing allegations that include p*rnography and the creation of obscene content. In Istanbul, the chief prosecutor's office confirmed that 26 individuals were taken into custody, with drugs, digital devices, contraband alcohol, and a firearm confiscated during the city's operations. Furthermore, the Ankara chief prosecutor's office announced the arrest of an additional 21 people in connection with an ongoing investigation involving the LGBTQ+ rights organisation, Kaos GL.

Kaos GL, however, reported a higher figure, stating that at least 50 activists had been detained, with 10 of these arrests occurring during raids on their private residences. The group also revealed that authorities had restricted access to numerous websites and social media profiles affiliated with LGBTQ+ organisations and individuals. The Human Rights Association in Turkey vehemently condemned the operation, labelling it as politically motivated. The association declared, "This is not a judicial investigation; it is a political operation aimed at forcing society into a monolithic family model and purging LGBTI+ and independent civil society under the guise of protecting the family and children." They added, "To include unrelated charges such as ‘forming a criminal organization,’ ‘drugs,’ ‘pr*stitution’ and ‘obscenity’ serves not to reveal the truth but to incriminate the entire community."

In a separate statement, the Human Rights Association further asserted that "The real name of this operation is not ‘My Family is Safe’; it is state-led discrimination, politics of fear and the dismantling of civil society." This crackdown aligns with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's broader "Decade of Family and Population" agenda, an initiative designed to tackle declining birth rates and champion conventional family structures within the country.

Nacho Sanchez Amor, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Turkey, characterised the government's actions as a "shocking escalation" of suppressive measures. He commented, "This imposition of a moral agenda is a blatant violation of fundamental rights and Turkey’s international commitments taking the country down a dark path." Prosecutors have put forward claims that children were being inappropriately influenced on matters concerning s*xual orientation and gender identity. While same-s*x relationships remain legal in Turkey, LGBTQ+ rights organisations have consistently accused the government of enacting discriminatory policies and engaging in repression. President Erdogan himself has previously employed hostile rhetoric towards LGBTQ+ individuals, linking them to Turkey's decreasing birth rates.

It is important to note that the accusations brought against those arrested and the targeted organisations are yet to be substantiated in a court of law.
