Deadly Unrest Claims Four Lives in Lagos's Ikola Community

A violent confrontation that reportedly began with a disagreement on Thursday resulted in the deaths of four individuals at the Power Line Bus Stop, Ikola, within the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

According to an anonymous community resident, the incident escalated from an argument between a man from the northern part of Nigeria and an individual believed to be a former cult leader. The source stated, “My understanding is that a Northerner stabbed a former leader of a cult group. This act triggered the riot, prompting police officers from Meiran Division to request backup. I can confirm one death, with whispers of three more.”

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), verified the casualty count in a statement issued on Thursday, confirming that four adult males died in the melee. He also noted that several other people sustained various injuries during the incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu elaborated that LASEMA received an emergency call regarding a fire outbreak in the vicinity at 1:52 pm, deploying its response team which arrived approximately 25 minutes later. He explained, “Initial assessment and discussions with residents at the scene suggest the incident stemmed from a dispute that spiraled into communal unrest. Sadly, four adult males perished, and numerous others suffered injuries.”

Additionally, the LASEMA PS reported that the disturbance led to the burning down of several makeshift structures. Injured victims received immediate medical attention from the Agbado Oke-Odo Ambulance Service, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and other healthcare providers. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was subsequently able to extinguish the fire and carried out damping down operations to prevent further spread.

A joint security operation, involving personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, was activated to restore peace and safeguard lives and property. The Chairman of Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area was also present to help coordinate efforts with local community leaders.

LASEMA confirmed that normalcy has since been restored in Ikola and its surrounding areas, with security forces maintaining a presence to deter any further breakdown of law and order. Oke-Osanyintolu appealed to residents to remain calm, refrain from retaliatory actions, and avoid circulating unverified information that could heighten tensions. He affirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident, assuring that anyone found responsible would face legal consequences. He further commended the swift response and cooperation of emergency and security agencies, community leaders, and residents.

This incident echoes a similar event reported by PUNCH Online in March, where Lagos State Police Command operatives apprehended 18 suspects in connection with a violent clash in Ilemba Hausa, Ojo area of Lagos. That clash, which involved local youths, was captured in a widely circulated social media video showing groups exchanging dangerous projectiles as the situation intensified. The command’s spokesperson, Adebisi Abimbola, had confirmed the arrests following that incident.
