Golf Icon Tiger Woods to Face Court Over DUI Incident

Golf maestro Tiger Woods is scheduled for his initial court appearance following his apprehension on DUI charges and involvement in a vehicle accident. The 50-year-old athlete was taken into custody on March 27 after his SUV overturned in Jupiter Island, an exclusive residential area, while he was reportedly attempting to overtake a truck and trailer at high speed. Authorities discovered two opioid painkillers in Woods' possession, leading to charges of driving under the influence, property damage, and refusing to undergo a lawful sobriety test.

Nearly five months after the crash, it has now been confirmed that Woods will finally appear in court on the matter in early September. Reports indicate that the court date had been repeatedly postponed as prosecutors in South Florida continued their investigative process. Douglas Duncan, an attorney, will represent the 15-time major champion in court. Woods had previously waived his arraignment and formally requested a jury trial for the case.

His most recent legal proceeding occurred on August 4, following a July decision that granted prosecutors access to Woods' hospital records pertinent to the crash. Martin County circuit court judge Darren Steele had sanctioned an agreement between the State Attorney's Office and Woods' legal counsel, permitting prosecutors to request records from the hospital that provided treatment to the PGA legend post-accident. Furthermore, in May, Judge Steele had approved a similar arrangement, allowing prosecutors to obtain Woods' prescription medication records from his Palm Beach pharmacy, covering the period between January 1 and his March crash.

Both the prosecution and Woods' legal team have consented to a protective order, which restricts the disclosure of any hospital or prescription records to only the State Attorney's Office, law enforcement, state-appointed experts, and the defense. Prior to the incident, Woods was reportedly nearing a return to professional golf and was widely anticipated to compete at The Masters tournament.
