Shakur Family Leaves Court as Gruesome Autopsy Photos Emerge in Las Vegas Trial

The Las Vegas murder trial involving Duane "Keffe D" Davis, who faces charges for allegedly orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that claimed the life of rap icon Tupac Shakur, saw emotionally charged moments recently. On Tuesday, August 18, as prosecutors presented graphic autopsy photographs of Tupac Shakur, several of his family members found it necessary to leave the courtroom. These distressing images have since circulated online. While some relatives departed, others remained to confront the stark realities of the rapper's fatal injuries.
Davis, aged 63, is currently facing a potential life sentence should he be convicted of murder with a deadly weapon, particularly if proven that the act was intended to benefit, advance, or aid a criminal gang. He has maintained a plea of not guilty. His legal counsel, Michael Sanft, opened the defense by dismissing the prosecution's narrative as "fiction." Sanft argued to the jury that Davis had not been charged previously, despite his self-incriminating statements in interviews and his memoir, because law enforcement allegedly deemed his accounts to be "full of crap."
Dr. Lisa Gavin, a forensic pathologist and medical examiner for Clark County, Nevada, testified early on the second day of the proceedings. Jurors were initially shown an image of a green body bag, followed by a disturbing photograph depicting Shakur's body. The sight caused some remaining relatives to avert their gaze, and one woman eventually left the courtroom after the photos were displayed.
Zayd Akinyela, a cousin of Tupac Shakur, expressed his resolve to stay in court, seeking a deeper understanding of the events. He told The Associated Press outside the courtroom, "I feel like the details, especially for people that are close to him, honestly for me helps, helps the grief process. I think we've been waiting 30 years to grieve properly." Akinyela further elaborated, "A lot of people don't get to grieve until they understand what happened to their loved one and how it happened. That's why I wanted to stay and just see for my own personal closure." He lamented not knowing the number of times his cousin was shot and pondered how the tragic night might have unfolded differently.
Dr. Gavin detailed that three bullets struck Shakur, with one piercing his chest and a lung. This injury led to a collapsed and bleeding lung, which surgeons ultimately removed in a desperate attempt to save his life. Other bullets caused damage to his intestines and various parts of his body. The courtroom, nearly full, fell silent as jurors intently viewed the photographs of Shakur's bloated body, marked by multiple chest wounds. One particular image highlighted his tattoos and the chest tubes still present from his six-day hospitalisation before his demise. It was noted that these sensitive images were not broadcast on the trial's video feed. Dr. Gavin, although not the original autopsy examiner (who has since passed away), was called as an expert witness.
Throughout Dr. Gavin's testimony, Davis remained still, observing the screen before him, occasionally conferring in hushed tones with his attorney. Akinyela described his reaction to the photos as "very angry, very angry, to say the least, very sad." However, he added a philosophical note: "I'm very spiritual, so just seeing the body doesn't affect me the same way as it might some people. I do believe that his spirit is still around and still lives on through his family and through his legacy."
