A Nigerian Catholic clergyman recently recounted a distressing account involving an elderly man who, on his deathbed, admitted to his daughter that he had sexually abused her own children.

Father Evaristus Bassey shared this poignant tale on the social media platform X, detailing how an only daughter dedicated over a year of her life to caring for her ailing father, even leaving her employment to do so.

According to Fr. Bassey, the infirm elderly man, believing his end was near, summoned his daughter to seek her forgiveness. It was then that he confessed to a heinous act committed more than a decade prior: he had raped her two young daughters when they were merely 10 and 8 years old.

The revelation left the daughter utterly shocked, deeply disappointed, and profoundly distressed. She found herself consumed by thoughts of revenge, wishing her father were strong enough to be handed over to law enforcement. "Only the fear of God stopped her," Fr. Bassey wrote. "How can a granddad do that to his grandkids!" she repeatedly lamented.

Overwhelmed by the confession, she suddenly recalled that her elder daughter had attempted to disclose something years ago. However, the mother had dismissed the possibility of such an abomination and, consequently, failed to pay attention. Now, she was inconsolable, struggling to forgive herself for her past oversight.

Fr. Bassey concluded his post with a reflection on the enduring nature of emotional pain, stating: "Physical pain might be bound to a period but the pain of the mind and heart is timeless."
