Edo Community Mourns as 85-year-old Leader Falls to Gunmen

A devastating incident has occurred in Edo State, where an 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, lost his life to the hands of gunmen. Owie, who served as the Secretary of Iyowa Community, was tragically shot at his residence located in Iguosa, near Okhungun, in Benin City. The Edo State Police Command's spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident to journalists on Saturday, August 8, 2026. According to Ikoedem, the police received a report from the deceased's son, Osayomwanbo Owie, following the attack at the victim's home, No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City. Osayomwanbo reported that his father was attacked by two unidentified gunmen at approximately 8:15 pm on August 2. As stated by Ikoedem, 'One of the assailants reportedly shot the victim in the head, resulting in his death.' The police visited the scene, documented the incident, and recovered relevant evidence. Ikoedem stated that an investigation is ongoing and efforts are being intensified to identify and apprehend the suspects. The remains of the deceased were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for further procedures.
