A devastating attack by heavily armed terrorists has left no fewer than 20 people dead in several communities within the Sauna District of Talata Mafara Local Government Area in Zamfara State. The brazen assault, which lasted for approximately three hours, began around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and continued until about 5:00 p.m., resulting in significant loss of life, destruction of property, and displacement of residents. According to survivors, the terrorists, who also stole a substantial number of livestock, operated freely without any intervention from nearby security personnel, who were accused of abandoning their posts and fleeing for safety. One survivor recounted the ordeal, stating, 'The attack started around 2 p.m. and continued until about 5 p.m. The terrorists operated freely for three hours without any security operatives coming to our rescue.' The survivor further alleged that 'the police and the soldiers who are close by ran away for their own lives, leaving the residents completely at the mercy of the terrorists. Nobody came to protect us while the terrorists moved from one community to another.' The affected communities include Zauren Goro, Tulluwa, Unguwar Shanu, Tsangaya, Tudun Namali, and Tungar Dahiru. Residents reported that the terrorists initially attempted to invade Sauna town but were repelled by local vigilantes, after which they redirected their attack to surrounding villages where they met little resistance. The victims were being buried on Thursday morning in accordance with Islamic rites, as families and community members mourned the loss of their loved ones. At least five people who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Talata Mafara. This latest incident highlights the persistent insecurity in Zamfara State, where armed gangs have continued to launch deadly raids on rural communities despite repeated military operations and government assurances. Amnesty International has previously condemned the killing of at least 24 farmers by suspected bandits in the area, describing it as further evidence that Nigeria's security strategy in the state has failed. The human rights organization stated that the attackers specifically targeted farmers in their fields, shooting any adult they encountered, and that the attack is yet another proof that the security strategy adopted to deal with the situation in Zamfara is not working.
